Session 6

During this session we went through the editing similar to session 5, but we had some disagreements upon editing the final clips whilst we were doing this we were un-aware that Steve had spied out our props and fancied tying them out, however he was caught in the act.
After we had discovered Steve's scary side we got down back to work, where Steve showed Ash how to upload clips from the camera onto the laptop some images are shown below.

After documenting the evidence of Ash actually getting some work done with steve I continued to document evidence of Ash hard at work uploading and importing the clips and stills from both cameras I decided to record this evidence and post the images as seen below.
We also received help form some of our friends who kindly helped star in our Hollywood block buster some of which being Jake starring as Terrorist 2 and Theressa who helped film after Naomi had left (wont be making that mistake ever again!). We also had Jake Hatter who played the Interrogator (and was very good at it) we also had some very interesting out takes. Of which I shall show you in a later post.

Session 5

During this lesson we edited the clips that we had taken previous, we did have an in -experienced cameraman so this did dramatically effect our film as the clip was not up to the standards we had hoped for. However I am pleased to say that we did get everyone together, to finally shoot our interrogation scene, as I had went into Cambridge to purchase two balaclavas which we needed to use in our interrogation scene, images of which are shown below.

We were also going to use a pistol, but we couldn't find a supplier so we used a friends cap gun, which is also shown below. However we did not actually use it in the initial scene as we couldn't find my colleuge in time.

Session 4

During the first lesson I thought that It was going to be another fruitless day, however luck seemed to be on my side, group 4 asked me if I could star in their film as an extra, I saw an oppertunity to strike a deal, as this group had some props that we needed so I thought that this would be a good time to ask for something in return, they agreed to exchange myself as an actor for a prop pistol. We now have more local actors some of which being Kirstie and Lewis as some reserve actors, furthermore Tom has approached me to star in our movie, which I am considering. There are also some images on Flikr that will be uploaded momentarily by my college Lewis, of such images I will post later on.

Whilst I was out acting with group 4, Ash was (hopefully) creating a sound track on garage band, I am confident that we will eventually get some filming done at lunch today if we can track down the actors and borrow the media studio, however this lesson has gone much quicker than previously expected I just hope that the rest of the day wont fly by as past.

Session 3

Today Ash and I discussed locations for our last scene, well at least I think we did, to be honest Im not quite sure what we are doing now, Im getting random actors coming up to me and saying what time are we filming, I don't even know what were doing. So far we have asked the drama department if we could borrow the hall from 1:50 to 2:35.

However my partner has decided to change it so that were filming somewhere else and then we go looking for the actors that Ash had apparently asked to meet up in the hall, so then we go storming round 'C' block looking for the actors of which we only found two (Jake Hatter and Naomi), Ash then decided to wait in the 'C' block corridor for no apparent reason. After this we then decided to walk back down to G19.

Although today wasn't a complete waste of time as Steve then showed usa building containing three rooms one being green (for super imposing) one black and one white. After this Steve then walked back to G19 and Ash and I then inspected each room looking what each room had to offer, I personally believe that we should use the dark room, for the interrogation scene as I think that this as the best atmosphere if we covered the sliding door with some black bin liner or something. However Im sure that Ash has other ideas.

Moreover we still haven't even started filming yet, as to why i can only assume that we, well Id be lying if I gave you a reason, but Im sure there is one I am just not in any mood to start to ponder why it has taken such a long time to start what i originally thought was going to be a rather simple film.

I am sorry if you are reading this Ash but we need to start to work and Im sure you going to give me a rather convincing reason as to why but just jive me a break here ok Im trying my best and although it seems like Im just messing around I am trying. if you have read this far well done and thanks for understanding :)

Session 2

Today we are re-evaluating our filming timetable, getting confirmation on who the actors are and if they are available for the filming. Since this was supposed to be our filming day I am researching our props and looking on the internet for replica guns, furthermore I have been discussing our actual story board and starting to find small plot holes which neither myself nor Ash was completely sure about how to approach.

Moreover we have been searching our sources and following up links on websites about the fake blood situation, as we need a substantial amount of it. However I do have a bottle of fake blood around my house, or I could find an associate of mine who does photography and request a packet of fake blood that he uses during his photographing. More over we need to allocate different costumes for each character so that it make our film seem more mature final piece. We did see the other group make some of their own fake blood and use it in their film shown below:

Session 1

Today during the lesson Ashleigh and I were contemplating the usage of the filming equipment usage and the issue of booking the said items such as a: video camera (filming), Tripod, Stills camera (taking photos on the scene) and a dolly (which could be used to hold the Tripod) we reserved them so that we defiantly had equipment reserved for that day. Furthermore we discussed the locations of our reception scene as we were not sure where we would shoot it. Moreover we are contemplating the audition dates for our actors, as to where and when they should turn up. Below is are images of a booking form and actors contact sheets:

Upon this we decided to make an actors call sheet to establish the contact numbers of our actors so we can keep informed about their current situation as to location and if there in or off sick ( or if we simply cant find them). We have also started copying up the shot lists so that both myself and Ash have an up-to date copy of all shots and actions with the locations.

Analyzing a film poster part 3




Terrorists have hijacked a Boeing 747 en route from Athens to Washington, D.C., demanding in exchange for the hostages the release of terrorist El Sayed Jaffa, who had been captured by the United States and taken into prison. It is then learnt that the terrorists are really plotting to attack Washington, D.C. by placing an explosive on the airplane which contains a large amount of nerve gas which will be released upon detonation. A plan is then devised to place a small unit of American special forces into the plane during mid-flight to retake control and disable the bomb. If they are not successful, the decision to shoot down the aircraft before it reaches United States airspace is made, trading the lives of the approximately 400 innocent passengers to save the lives of hundreds of thousand people on the ground. This decision is an "executive decision", meaning that it must be specifically approved by the President of the United states of America.

Analysing a film poster part 2.


People: In this poster is an image of John Travolta who plays as Ryder, who is the leader of the hijackers. rather than playing a mercenary, he plays a former Wall Street "high roller" called Dennis Ford, who blames the city of New York and the mayor for causing him to stay in prison for 10 years, longer than the guilty plea of three years. Scott courted Travolta heavily for the actor's first action role in years, Travolta made 20 million dollars for his role. The role was originally illustrated by Robert Shaw in the 1974 film.

Design: the predominant image of John Trevolta suggest that he is a key character in the film and since he is also a highly paid actor. He plays the boss hijacker in the taking of Pelham 1,2,3. there is also images of a train which the viewer assumes is that of the train 1,2,3, and the city of New York which the film is based around, this is also a key feature since it is the city of New York that causes the hijacking as previously described in the earlier paragraph.

Colour: Is a dominant dark blue/ light grey and is very bland. However this enforces the seriousness of the poster as a more humorous poster would be glowing with vibrant colour such as reds, greens, light blue and in some cases yellow.

Title: The text is clearly displayed across the middle with a famous actors name across the top to attract any passers by or anyone who is looking at the poster to entice them to see the film, there is also the release date across the bottom of the poster so that the person can see when the film will be out either to tell his or hers friends about the film so the producers will get even more money from a larger audience.


Analysing a film poster part 1.



People: In this poster is a character named 'V' who is a masked anarchist who seeks to systematically kill the leaders of Norsefire, which is a fascist dictatorship governing a post-apocalyptic United Kingdom. He is an expert in the arts of explosives, karate, knife throwing, and computer hacking, and has a vast dictionary, cultural and philosophical intellect. 'V' is the lone survivor of an experiment in which four dozen prisoners were given injections of a compound named "Batch 5." The compound caused vast cellular anomalies that eventually killed all of the subjects apart from V, who developed advanced strength, reflexes, endurance, durability and pain tolerance. Throughout the film, V almost always wears his trademark Guy Fawkes mask which includes a shoulder-length wig of straight dark-brown hair and an outfit consisting of black gloves, tunic, trousers and boots with a long black cape. When V is not wearing the mask, his face is not visabl. When outside the Shadow Gallery (his home), he completes this ensemble with a circa-17th century conical hat . His weapons of choice are daggers, explosives and fear.

The film suggests that 'V' took his name from the Roman numeral "V", which was the number of the room he was held in during the experiment. At the end of the film he kills Creedys bodyguads so quickly that the don't have time to reload their guns, However some bullets do penetrate his amour and he stumbles back to Evey and dies in her arms. Evey then assumes V's identity and gives the original V a Viking funeral by placing him inside a bomb-laden train whose eventual destination is Downing street.

The character "V" is presented as somewhat of an anarchist in the darkness suggesting an intimidating atmosphere. since he has two blades in his hands this implies that he is a masked killer, with lethal accuracy.

Design: We can see 'V' standing alone as if to look back at the person looking at the poster, this creates an illusion that he will come out of the poster and get you which evokes some emotions like fear and excitement. There is also an element of danger as 'V' is seen with two daggers which he an use to lethal accuracy.

Colour: There is a good combination between the black and red. However the red text does stand out and catch the viewers eye, there is also a quote from the film "People should not be afraid of their governments, governments should be afraid of their people." which makes the person stop and think about the film, of what it will include.

Title: The title is in red across the bottom of the poster with 'V's signature in the background. The title is clear and easy to read as it is in red which is the boldest colour on the poster. It is also all in capitals to draw the attention towards the letter V since that is the running name for the character also for the cell door he was in, it also stands for vendetta as the title suggests.

Mini film storyboards and text.

In this story board you can see the hostage being interrogated, whom then reveals the location of the safe/vault, then is executed by one of the captors, the clip ends with the camera close up of the hostages face as you can see in shot 6.

This storyboard follows on from the first one with the body of the hostage falling to the ground, then the camera cutting to footsteps going up stairs, which in turn cuts to the help desk, in which the gun fight takes place between the captors and the security guards, after the captors have killed the guards, they get a hostage and question him/her about the location of the safe/vault, during shot 12 the captors have found the safe/vault and are getting the combinations of the lock .

This is the 3rd story board which includes a reaction shot of the captors upon opening the safe/vault door which then cut to a point of view shot form the safe, then to a canted angle where a wounded guard pushes the silent alarm button, immediately after this the captor sees the guard on the way out and executes him, this hen leads into an establishing shot of the empty room, then to the close up shot of the two captors saying "Hurry up" in shot 18 .

Here only two shots are visible, as these are the last two shots in the film, the first shot being of the safe/vault door closing from a point of view shot. which leads straight into blackness as the door of the safe/vault is closed, the audience will then (hopefully) hear the captors going back down the stairs, whilst the audience can only hear rather than see making them use their sense of hearing rather than the sense of sight, I believe that this will also keep the audience in a state of suspense as they are left wondering what has happened and what will happen.

what we did during last weeks lesson part 5


This shot is similar to the previous post. However this is again a work in progress stage where i had literally just finished cutting out the photo copy of the postit story board and had started to discuss where we would place the key frames, also to decide what and where the shots that would fill the gaps in the middle of the key frames would be placed, also what the shot type, camera angle and dialog should be.

This image is similar to the previous post however this is the work in progress stage, where myself and Ash are in the initial stage of editing our written stage buy cutting out a photo copy of the postit storyboard to re-assemble and move key frames around, Ash is in the beginning stage like myself of going over everything on the storyboard in pen, as to make the images and text stand out.

mood board :p




This is my mood board for the Action and thriller mini film we shall be doing. I have included some images of hostages, guns, money and interrogation rooms as these will be common sights in our film, I have also included an image of a safe/vault door, since we are going to be basing our film around robbing a safe, to get the documents/money/diamonds/whatever else I can think of. I have incorporated the interrogation stills because at the start of our film a character is actually being held hostage and being interrogated. I have also gone for some weapon stills for the desired impact to show the viewer that these robber's are the professionals and not your every day thief.

I chose to go with a drum kit based piece as i am a fan of drumming and i love to play the drums now and then so i thought that it would be sensible to choose a instrument that I am familiar with I did also include a guitar too as mu friend is a keen guitarist and I thought that it might sound decent if the two were combined and as you can see above the result was acceptable.

I initially decided to go for one of Banksy's graffiti, but then i moved through other several phases of not knowing what to use, however i realized that i could get motivation from my hobby, which is a board game with lots of dice. so i then thought of using a dice based theme originally having a 7 sided dice to break tradition, i also chose the colour blue, because i have rarely ever seen a blue dice s i thought that i would make my logo out of a blue 6 sided dice rather than 7 as i was not able to effectively draw a 7 sided dice. so in photo shop i drew a d
facing sideways with the dots in black and the rest of the dice in blue. i then posted the image to vimeo.

what we did today



Today I edited our film in final cut as you can see in the above image, even though we only got five shots done, because we were the last group in and it was the end of the day. As you can see the five shots comprised of character 2 entering, reaction shot from character 1, c2 sitting down, over the shoulder shot in shot 4, then shot five over the shoulder shot 5 with dialogue form c1. furthermore the constant flow of visitors took valuable time out of our shooting so that slowed the process even further but I am including a screen grab of what i have done so far in final cut.

match on action

an example would be a door opening scene, when one shot would be the hand going for the handle, which then goes straight to the scene when the character walking into/out of the room, in other words it makes the shots flow. Another example would be where we did the phone call exercise, we had to make the conversation between the two characters talking despite the timing of the shot i cropped the length so it looked as if it was playing in real time.

180 degree rule


180 degree rule is an imaginary line that goes across the floor and wall, which is the boundary for the camera. it would confuse the viewer if there was a over the shoulder shot with a door on the left then the camera changed shoulder and the door vanished. so it would make sense to have the shot on the same shoulder. to achieve maximum impact.

I believe that this character closely resembles the teenage generation. An example of this would be that he goes on social networking sites i.e. facebook, watches videos on facebook, uses gaming consoles such as the Xbox 360. He also visits his local pub as a regular on sundays, as all his other days he spends at his dad's or doing work at college, he loves to listen to music either from you tube or his CD's he buys in H.M.V with his money which he gets from the college EMA system. He is usually found with a mate or two listening to music or just having a drink in the pub whilst watching the new box office films. The music he listens to most would be the Gorillaz, he usually dresses casually in jeans and a shirt he found crumpled on his bedroom floor.

I personally believe that this is totally and completely wrong and has absolutely nothing to do with me. for example I have never bought hair spray and i don't change my hair style every day to prove that I am me. However i do love mosh pits and listening to heavy metal but Im not a fussy person as long as its not pop rubbish. Moreover I do think that the questions really had an impact on the result of the outcome.

I would finally like to state that overall I enjoyed this task and was to be honest quite shocked about the result, however the initial task was rather interesting and if i would do it again i would defiantly chose different answers.
